The Security Breach of MyFitnessPal
On March 29, 2018, it was reported that data of more than 150 million users of a popular fitness and dietary app called MyFitnessPal have been hacked. The data that was stolen included the users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords. This company then immediately notified their users through emails and in-app messaging after they had noticed than there was unauthorized access to the data on February. The company then urged the users to change their passwords immediately. Unfortunately, it is still unclear who had orchestrated the data breach which stole the data of millions of users.
Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, then claimed that their users’ financial information were not affected by the breach in any way. As the company does not require any government issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers of social security numbers, the damage of the data breach is considered as moderate. Right now, the company is trying to find out how the hackers were able to access their system without being noticed.
And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen may seem like it doesn’t matter, the information can still have bigger power than what the users may think. For instance, the app has the ability to know the precise performance and location data of its users. This means that if another person has the capability to access a user’s account, then they will also hold the capability of knowing about the user’s location and how fast the user is currently going. The users are then in potential danger and can be tracked by whoever holds their data.
Getting Your Data Secured
This situation is a very important reminder for everyone that in this modern age of technology, any personal data can be easily hacked into. Thus, listed below are the things that a person can do in order to secure their private data.
1. Using Complex Passwords
While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though making your password more complex may seem too easy, this may give the hackers a hard time in cracking your password and therefore giving more time for the app’s company to fix the issue and have your important data secured.
2. Reading Through the App’s Terms and Services.
While a lot of people like skipping on the terms and services, it is still very important that users know and learn what exactly they’re getting themselves into. It is important for the users to know just what it is that the app can do.
While data breaches like these are common these days, and companies have the means to protect its users, it is still best if users take precautionary measures themselves.
